Man Accused of Planting Armpit Hair in Food to Avoid $600 Restaurant Bill: Report

On This Post

A man is accused of planting an armpit hair in his food in an effort to avoid paying a nearly $600 bill at a restaurant in Sydney, Australia, according to local reports.

The incident allegedly occurred at Pony in The Rocks. Staff told 7NEWS that a family visiting from Ireland ordered several high-priced menu items, including a nearly four-pound tomahawk steak, along with additional entrées and drinks.

“I’ve never seen this ever before. Like, this was another level of trying to scam,” Neil Nolan, who said he works at the restaurant, told the outlet.

According to staff, the family did not raise concerns about the alleged hair until the end of the meal. Nolan said one patron became “increasingly agitated,” raised his voice and stated he did not intend to pay the bill. He added that a woman at the table began crying as other diners looked on.

The hair in question was described as blonde. Nolan told 7NEWS that none of the kitchen staff matched that description.

Management ultimately decided to waive the bill, citing disruption to other guests.

On Feb. 12, the restaurant shared what it described as security footage from inside the venue. The video, as reported by 7NEWS, appears to show a man reaching under his arm, plucking a hair and placing it on a plate.

“We don’t usually share content like this,” the restaurant wrote in a social media post. “After the meal was served, the guest later raised a complaint regarding a hair in their meal and declined payment. The matter has been formally reported.”

The restaurant also claimed it later became aware of similar allegations involving what it believes to be the same family at another nearby venue.
