3 Gresham Teens Arrested After Shooting at Rocky Butte, Police Chase

On This Post

Three teenagers from Gresham have been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a man was shot near Rocky Butte late Wednesday night, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Officers responded just after 11 p.m. to reports of gunfire on Northeast Rocky Butte Road. At the scene, police recovered three semiautomatic handguns but did not initially locate a victim.

Police then spotted a vehicle leaving the area and attempted a traffic stop. Investigators said the driver fled, running red lights and passing vehicles in turn lanes at high speeds. Officers deployed spike strips, damaging the tires, but the driver continued until police used a PIT maneuver near Northeast 148th Avenue and Northeast Halsey Street to stop the car.

The three occupants — all from Gresham — were taken into custody:

  • 18-year-old D’Angelo Smartlowit

  • A 17-year-old boy

  • A 16-year-old boy

Meanwhile, a man suffering from a serious gunshot wound arrived at a hospital by private vehicle. Investigators later determined his injuries were connected to the Rocky Butte shooting. Police said he is expected to recover.

Neighbors say the area has experienced repeated incidents of violence in recent years, including prior shootings at nearby parks and roadways. Some residents have called for increased patrols and stricter enforcement of park curfews. Rocky Butte is open daily from 5 a.m. to midnight.

All three suspects face the following charges:

  • Second-degree attempted murder

  • First-degree assault

  • Unlawful use of a weapon

  • Unlawful possession of a firearm

The 17-year-old, identified by police as the driver, also faces charges of attempting to elude police and reckless driving. The 16-year-old was additionally wanted on an unrelated warrant.

Smartlowit was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center. The two juveniles were lodged at the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center.
