Crook County pushes for urgent safety fixes after fatal Highway 126 crash

On This Post

Crook County commissioners are calling on state and local leaders to move quickly to improve safety at the intersection of Highway 126 and Powell Butte Highway, pointing to a recent deadly crash and growing worries about traffic hazards along the heavily traveled route.

A Bend woman was killed in a head-on collision near the intersection on Jan. 28. County officials say the tragedy highlights the urgent need for safety upgrades on Highway 126.

Officials have proposed several safety upgrades, including installing flashing speed signs and reducing the speed limit. However, county leaders note that building a roundabout at Powell Butte Highway and Highway 126 remains years away.

The estimated cost of the project has risen significantly, increasing from $3.5 million to $6 million.
