REEDSPORT, Ore. — A woman has been arrested on multiple felony charges after a house fire in Reedsport left two people dead late Thursday night, according to authorities.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said emergency crews responded to a fire in the 27000 block of Lower Smith River Road shortly before 11 p.m. on April 16 after callers reported that people were missing and possibly trapped inside.
Two Victims Found Dead Inside Home
When deputies and firefighters arrived, they attempted a rescue and pulled one person from the burning home. Despite lifesaving efforts, the 65-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second victim, aged 67, was later found inside the residence and also declared dead. A third individual managed to escape unharmed.
Suspect Admits to Starting Fire, Officials Say
Authorities identified the suspect as Pamela Anne Westfall, 41, of Reedsport. Deputies detained her at the scene, where she allegedly admitted to intentionally starting the fire.
Investigators said early findings indicate the fire may have been sparked following a dispute inside the home.
Multiple Charges Filed
Westfall was taken into custody and booked into the Douglas County Jail. She faces several serious charges, including:
- Murder
- Attempted murder
- Arson
- Warrant arrest
Jail records confirm she remained in custody as of April 17.
Major Crimes Team Leading Investigation
The case is being handled by the Douglas County Major Crimes Team, which includes investigators from multiple agencies such as:
- Oregon State Police
- Roseburg Police Department
Officials from the district attorney’s office are also assisting with the investigation.
Additional support at the scene came from regional fire departments and state agencies, including the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office and crime lab personnel.
