Man Sentenced in 1983 Oregon Killing After Decades-Long Investigation Breakthrough

On This Post

A California man has been sentenced in connection with a decades-old homicide case, bringing long-awaited closure to a crime that remained unsolved for more than 40 years.

Marcus Sanfratello, 73, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the killing of Teresa Joann Peroni. According to the Oregon Department of Justice, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison and must serve at least 10 years.

Disappearance and Early Investigation

Peroni, 27, was reported missing in July 1983 after attending a Fourth of July gathering in Selma. She was last seen walking into a wooded area with Sanfratello, who was her boyfriend at the time. Authorities noted the pair had argued shortly before her disappearance.

Despite suspicions, investigators were unable to gather enough evidence at the time to pursue charges.

Break in the Case

The case took a significant turn in 1997 when a human skull was discovered on private property near where Peroni was last seen. However, it wasn’t until 2024 that renewed investigative efforts—including witness re-interviews and DNA analysis—provided the evidence needed to move forward.

Sanfratello was arrested in California in June 2025 and later extradited to Oregon to face charges.

Past Criminal Record and Prosecution Effort

Court records indicate Sanfratello had prior convictions, including an attempted murder case in California in 1985 and a later conviction for theft-related charges in 1999.

Prosecutors credited a coordinated effort by multiple agencies, including the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, and the Oregon State Police, for revisiting and organizing decades of evidence to secure a conviction.

Family Gets Long-Awaited Justice

Dan Rayfield emphasized the significance of the case, noting the perseverance required to resolve it after so many years.

Officials said the outcome serves as a reminder that even the oldest cases remain a priority, and justice can still be pursued regardless of how much time has passed.
