Authorities in Southern California are investigating the deaths of a former Oregon mayor and his wife after both were discovered fatally shot inside their home, in what police believe may be a murder-suicide.
Victims Identified in Venice Home Shooting
The deceased have been identified as Jeremy Ferguson and his wife, Mandy Zelinka. Officers responded to their residence in Venice, California, around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, where they found both individuals dead at the scene.
Investigators say a friend alerted authorities after receiving an email believed to be a suicide note from Ferguson shortly before the incident.
Police Focus on Murder-Suicide Angle
Early findings suggest Ferguson may have shot Zelinka before turning the weapon on himself, though officials have not yet released a final determination as the investigation remains ongoing.
A family friend stated that there is no indication Zelinka took her own life, reinforcing the theory that she was a victim in the incident.
Remembering Mandy Zelinka
Zelinka, 49, was remembered by loved ones as a creative and passionate individual. A former student at Benson Polytechnic High School in Portland, she was known for her athletic talent in softball and later built a career as a stylist and marketing consultant.
She also founded and operated a salon in Portland’s Pearl District before relocating to California. Family members described her as someone deeply devoted to art, photography, and her professional pursuits.
Her sister shared an emotional tribute, describing Zelinka as a “vibrant force” who embraced creativity and took bold risks in life, adding that her life was taken by someone she trusted.
Jeremy Ferguson’s Public Career
Ferguson previously served as mayor of Milwaukie, Oregon, for six years before stepping down in 2015 to transition into private-sector work. During his time in public office, he also launched a campaign for a seat on the Clackamas County Board of Commissioners but later withdrew.
After leaving politics, Ferguson held roles in both the transportation and waste management sectors, including positions with Portland Streetcar and Republic Services. At the time of his death, he was working with Downtown Santa Monica, Inc., a nonprofit organization focused on local business development and community safety.
Investigation Continues
Law enforcement officials have not released further details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting. Authorities are continuing to gather evidence and review communications related to the case.
The tragedy has left friends, family, and the community mourning the loss while seeking answers about what led to the fatal incident.
