Drivers in Albany, Oregon should take note—new flashing school zone signs are now live near local campuses, bringing stricter speed enforcement during key hours.
Where the changes are happening
The City of Albany has installed updated signage and flashing lights along North Albany Road, near both North Albany Middle School and North Albany Elementary School.
The new system was activated on April 27, aiming to improve safety for students during busy arrival and dismissal times.
When the 20 mph speed limit applies
Once activated, the 20 mph school zone speed limit will only be enforced when the lights are flashing.
Regular school days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday):
- Morning: 7:20 a.m. – 9:25 a.m.
- Afternoon: 2:30 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.
Early release days (typically Wednesdays):
- Morning: 7:20 a.m. – 9:25 a.m.
- Afternoon: 1:30 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.
What drivers should know
City officials say the flashing lights are designed to clearly signal when reduced speeds are required, helping drivers stay alert and protect students in high-traffic areas.
For more details on enforcement or related traffic rules, residents can refer to the Albany Police Department or contact the city’s Public Works department.
