A 34-year-old man from Battle Ground has been taken into custody following a deadly shooting in Clark County, authorities confirmed.
Victim found inside home
Deputies with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence along Northeast Davis Road late Monday morning after receiving reports of possible gunfire.
When officers arrived, they discovered 73-year-old Gary R. Bender inside the home with fatal gunshot injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Suspect located nearby
Investigators identified the suspect as Brian E. Kangas, who was reportedly alone in the house with the victim prior to the shooting. Witnesses told authorities they saw Kangas leaving the area on a bicycle shortly after the incident.
Deputies later located him near Northeast 182nd Avenue and Risto Road. Officials said he was carrying a handgun at the time of his arrest, which was made without incident.
Investigation ongoing
Authorities have not yet released details about a possible motive. The case remains under active investigation as officials work to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
