A 17-year-old girl was killed and a 19-year-old woman critically injured when a speeding vehicle struck them on a sidewalk Saturday afternoon.
Officers from the North Las Vegas Police Department responded to a complaint of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash north of the intersection of West Craig Road and Simmons Street at 3:41 p.m. May 2.
Arriving officers discovered a collision involving several vehicles and pedestrians.
Crash details
According to preliminary findings, a 2020 BMW X3 was speeding northbound on Simmons Street at high speeds, passing vehicles and weaving through traffic as it reached Craig Road.
At the intersection, the BMW collided with a 2021 Kia Optima making a left turn.
After the incident, the BMW drove northbound, losing control as it passed through the intersection. The vehicle then exited the road, hitting a utility post, landscaping, and a cinder block wall before colliding with two individuals on the sidewalk.
Neighbors react
FOX 5 met with one man named Ngoyi, who lives near the crash site.
He discussed hearing a loud noise and went to investigate.
Ngoyi eventually lost power, and police advised him to flee while the collision was being handled.
“I heard one of the officers, police, came and knocked on the door,” Ngoyi replied.
“Wearing a mask, he said, you know, it’s not a good time for you people to stay here.”
Victims and injuries
The 17-year-old female was pronounced dead on the spot. The 19-year-old female was taken to a local hospital with significant injuries.
The driver of the Kia Optima and a juvenile passenger in the BMW were both uninjured.
Arrest
The driver of the BMW, a 32-year-old male, had indicators of probable intoxication. As part of the study, a blood draw was performed.
The motorist was eventually arrested and charged with various offenses, including dangerous driving leading in death, reckless driving resulting in significant bodily harm, child endangerment, and driving without a valid license.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office will announce the identification of the dead, as well as the cause and manner of death.
