An investigation into a deadly shooting in north Harris County is underway after deputies say a masked man broke into a residence and was shot by the homeowner.
Deputies arrived at the 16900 block of Spring Creek Oaks Court after they received a call reporting shots fired.
Some neighbors told ABC13 about a troubling encounter. “It’s kind of freaky because these things don’t happen here,” neighbor Gina Stanley explained.
Stanley told Eyewitness News she was sleeping before her phone started ringing. When I picked it up, the first thing I noticed was the Precinct 4 release, and I was like, ‘I think that’s my street,'” she added.
For several hours, her street became a crime scene. Stanley resides two homes down from the residence under scrutiny. I stood up and looked out the window at all the cars, and I’m yelling at my husband to get up,” she explained.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, a man wearing gloves and a mask entered the residence through a back door, waking up the homeowner. According to deputies, there were three other adults and two children inside.
A sheriff’s office representative stated that the suspect and the homeowner got into a dispute that spilled outside. According to investigators, the suspect initially fled but later returned, causing the situation to escalate.”At some point, the homeowner retrieved a handgun and shot the suspect, who then fled and leaped across the fence into the walking trail where he was discovered,” a sheriff’s office official stated.
On Wednesday evening, the neighborhood was quiet and serene, but the inquiry into why the disguised suspect broke into the house was still ongoing.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office stated that no one else was injured inside the home. When asked if the homeowner could face prosecution, investigators stated that the decision would be up to the district attorney’s office.
