5 people arrested for identity and mail theft in Texas

Five people were taken into custody after Live Oak police investigated alleged identity theft, mail theft and fraud at a Northeast Side home, according to authorities.

According to the Live Oak Police Department, officers searched a residence on Wednesday in the 6900 block of Elmwood Crest near Toepperwein Road.

Police arrested Octabio Ascencio, 50, Melanie Reyna, 34, and Richard Whitney, 39, in connection with the suspected identity theft and fraud plan.

According to investigators, Ascencio was suspected of stealing fewer than five identifying things, while Reyna and Whitney were accused of stealing almost 100 identifying items combined.

According to authorities, the stolen material contained personal identifying information such as names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, bank account information, and government-issued identity numbers.

Police also detained Giovanni Devora, 25, on a controlled substance allegation.

A fifth suspect, Britney Herlong, 35, was arrested on a larceny extradition warrant from Pasco County, Florida.

According to police, warnings from Flock license plate reader cameras linked stolen vehicles to the property being investigated.

Live Oak police and the Alamo Region SWAT team carried out the search warrant, seizing suspected bogus identification documents, credit cards, checks, stolen mail, electronic devices, and narcotics.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have indicated that additional charges may be filed.
