A person was bitten by a shark at Assateague State Park on Sunday morning.

Crews from the Berlin Fire Company and Assateague State Park verified that they had attended to the location and were still investigating as of 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

One park ranger told The Baltimore Sun that there was a “very chaotic scene” on the beach. Park rangers and first responders were still on the site, they added.

While sharks are frequently observed offshore in Assateague during the summer, a park ranger confirmed that this is the site’s first shark sighting of the year.
