The Forest Acres Police Department says a man was arrested following a domestic violence incident at a home on Barnes Springs Road that left a woman dead.
According to police, officers arrived to the 3000 block of Barnes Springs Road shortly before 3:40 p.m. Tuesday to conduct a welfare check after getting a call from a worried family member.
Police say they arrived at the site in less than two minutes after receiving the initial report.
Officers came and reported that the home’s access was blocked, so they pushed their way inside. Inside the house, officers discovered the body of a deceased woman.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the woman’s identity and cause of death, authorities said.
Police said Forest Acres hostage negotiators made contact with the man inside the residence and persuaded him to surrender in less than an hour.
Officers discovered that the culprit had sustained injuries upon apprehending him. Investigators suspect the injuries happened before officers got on the site. The defendant was taken to a hospital for treatment and is still in jail, according to police.
Officials stated the probe is still active and ongoing.
“This is a heartbreaking situation and a tragic reminder of the devastating impact domestic violence can have on families and communities,” said Chief Robinson.
“Domestic violence situations are often complex and dangerous, and we encourage anyone experiencing abuse or warning signs to seek help before situations escalate to violence.”
Police stated anyone experiencing domestic violence can contact Sistercare at 803-765-9428 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233).
