Two foreign nationals living illegally in the United States pleaded guilty to federal immigration violations in Maryland as part of a countrywide immigration enforcement initiative, federal prosecutors announced on Tuesday.
On May 5, Israel Reyes-Medina, 39, a Mexican citizen, pleaded guilty to illegal re-entry following deportation.
According to authorities, Reyes-Medina had previously been convicted of illegal entry and deported from the United States four times.
Authorities encountered him Jan. 8 in Middle River during an area enforcement operation.
In a second instance, on May 27, 43-year-old Guatemalan citizen Nery Adelso Asmen-Raymundo pleaded guilty to illegally entering the United States.
Federal officials said Asmen-Raymundo had been deported twice before, once in November 2009 and again in March 2010. Law enforcement officers located him in Baltimore on April 23.
The prosecutions are part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice campaign aimed at increasing immigration enforcement, combatting transnational criminal organisations and cartels, and lowering violent crime.
