A Wildwood man has been taken into custody on attempted murder charges following a shooting at a local apartment complex that left one person hospitalized with an abdominal gunshot wound.
Christopher Joseph Johnson, 42, was arrested late Monday night after a violent altercation at the Sundance Trail Apartments in the Beaumont complex off County Road 466A.
According to an arrest record from the Wildwood Police Department, officers first responded to the complex at 10 p.m. in response to a criminal mischief call.
A witness supplied Ring doorbell footage that caught the events leading up to the gunfire. The footage showed the victim smashing his ex-wife’s car windshield with a metal weapon. As the victim attempted to walk away toward the complex’s only exit, the camera caught Johnson, the woman’s boyfriend, running along the sidewalk to get ahead of his girlfriend’s ex-husband without making an announcement.
Both males briefly went out of the camera’s view before a single gunshot was heard. The investigation stated that there was no verbal conversation between the two guys before the gun was discharged.
When cops got on the scene, they discovered the ex-husband lying erect on the road with a gunshot wound to his lower right rib area. While an officer assisted with emergency medical care, the victim pointed to Johnson, who was sitting quietly on a curb approximately 10 feet away, and identified him as the gunman.
A firearm was discovered on the ground, about five feet from the bleeding victim and three feet from Johnson.
The victim was transferred to Ocala Regional Medical Center on a trauma alert.
After being held and read his Miranda rights, Johnson refused to speak with police.
He was arrested at the Sumter County Detention Center on a felony count of attempted felony murder and a misdemeanor charge of discharging a handgun on residential property. He is currently being held without a bond.
