Around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, officers received a 911 call about an emergency at a homeless encampment near the 3300 block of Portland Road NE. They located the suspect and victim inside a tent on a vacant property near some railroad tracks.
A Salem Police officer shot and injured a man accused of holding a woman hostage at the encampment, Oregon State Police officials said.
Police identified the man as 35-year-old Jose Luis Anguiano of Salem. He had a weapon, wasn’t cooperating with officers, and a “confrontation ensued.” During the confrontation, a Salem Police officer shot him.
SWAT assisted police in taking Anguiano into custody, and he was transported to Salem Hospital for treatment, where he’s listed in stable condition.
The woman walked out of the tent and contacted responding officers, Oregon State Police said.
Once Anguiano is treated for his gunshot wound, he’ll be booked into the Marion County Jail.
Oregon State Police is investigating the shooting with other local law enforcement agencies, which is Marion County protocol for use of deadly force incidents.
