Two people were taken into custody and charged on Sunday after leading cops on a high-speed chase through several towns that concluded in Middleboro, according to prosecutors.

Mariyah Mitchell, 19, of Taunton, and Jamel Spurill, 20, of Brockton were arraigned in Wareham District Court on Monday. Both pled not guilty to all allegations, including reckless endangerment of a child.

According to prosecutors, an employee at Trucci’s Market reported to police that he witnessed a couple arguing in a car in the parking lot and attempted to break it up. According to authorities, Spurill then entered the store and threatened two employees with a knife before fleeing in the car with Mitchell.

Police were able to deploy a GPS tracker on the couple’s vehicle, and they were eventually apprehended in Middleboro and arrested. According to Massachusetts State Police troopers, Mitchell’s and Spurill’s 11-month-old son was in the backseat during the chase.

Mitchell’s mother stated that there was no knife involved in the event and that the entire ordeal escalated because her daughter panicked.

“They were scared; she was scared. She didn’t know what to do; she’s a kid. He got in the car, and you know, she was nervous, so they left,” Mitchell’s mother, Kimberly Frates, explained.

Frates also stated that her grandchild is “fine”.

They were both released on bond and will return to court in July.
