A neighborhood dispute in Pittsburgh’s Fineview area escalated into a gunfight Tuesday, injuring two men near the 1700 block of Belleau Drive and sending them to the hospital. One man was struck numerous times and brought to a hospital in severe condition, while the other received gunshot wounds to his lower body and was transported to a different hospital. Before medics arrived, police officers on the scene began administering first aid.

According to WTAE, cops rushing to the 1700 block of Belleau Drive discovered the two men had already been shot and worked rapidly to stabilize them. According to the publication, officers applied a tourniquet on-scene until EMS arrived. One victim was transferred in critical condition, while the other was brought to another hospital for treatment. Detectives from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police have initiated an active investigation into the shooting.

The city’s public safety documents state that bureau officers are trained to give life-saving care in the field, including tourniquet administration and the use of hemostatic bandages, while waiting for EMS to arrive. Officials claim that those abilities have already saved lives on previous occasions. Pittsburgh Public Safety has chronicled the training and equipment updates on its website, and officers used those same methods Tuesday to keep both men alive until ambulances arrived.

Gunfire had already been heard on Belleau Drive and in the adjoining Allegheny Dwellings complex, adding to long-standing safety concerns along the North Side hillside. Previous coverage has chronicled prior shootings on the street, including a 2016 event that killed one person, as reported by WPXI. According to WESA, city authorities and community leaders are launching summer violence-prevention efforts in response to recurring events, including the deployment of “violence interrupters” at pools and youth areas to prevent conflicts from devolving into armed confrontations.

The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been revealed as of yet. WTAE says that anyone with information or footage from the area is requested to contact Pittsburgh police. Detectives are combing the neighborhood and reviewing neighboring camera footage to determine how a Tuesday altercation on Belleau Drive escalated into yet another shooting on the hillside. Authorities say they intend to reveal additional information as the case progresses.
