SHAVER LAKE, Calif. – A man had to be rescued after falling into a campsite vault toilet while trying to retrieve his sunglasses, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency crews responded to Camp Edison in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains shortly before 2:30 p.m. Saturday following reports of a confined space rescue.

When first responders arrived, they found that the man had fallen into the waterless, non-flushing toilet while attempting to recover the sunglasses he had accidentally dropped inside.

Sergeant Chris Tullus with the sheriff’s office toldcthat the man spent about 10 to 15 minutes inside the toilet before rescuers managed to pull him out.

“Via a Spanish translator, they advised that the subject had fallen into the chemical storage tank. Law enforcement, Camp Edison staff, and fire personnel responded and were able to safely get him out, decontaminate him, and, he’ll be ok.”

The man said he did not suffer any serious injuries and was able to walk away after Cal Fire crews hosed him down.
