A former Richland County deputy was taken into custody on Monday for stealing a watch that had been lost and found at the Richland County courtroom.
Sean Swayz, 28, was charged with petit larceny and taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on Friday.
A possible theft involving Swayz was reported to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, and an inquiry was launched, officials said.
Swayz grabbed a watch from the courthouse’s lost and found, which did not belong to him, according to investigators. The watch was retrieved.
Officials stated that Swayz is no longer employed by RCSD and was sacked on June 8. He had been working by the department since January 2023.
“I hold my deputies to a higher standard because of the trust placed in them by the public,” Sheriff Lott said. “Any act of theft, regardless of the value of the property involved, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
