A resident of The Plantation was taken into custody for driving under the influence at a Publix in Leesburg.

Officers went to the Publix at Lake Harris at 5 p.m. Thursday to check on 60-year-old Dana Rene Klontz, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. She was sitting in her gold car, parked on top of a curb.

When I spoke to her, she smelled like booze and couldn’t hold a conversation. She’d start answering, then stop in mid-sentence and gaze blankly. Her eyes were bloodshot and shiny, according to the report.

Lake County Fire Rescue was dispatched when Klontz reported shortness of breath and chest pain. When medical professionals requested her to exit the car so that they could transport her to UF Health Leesburg Hospital, she stumbled. The report stated that she had to grab onto the car door to avoid falling.

Klontz staggered forward, hanging onto the door once again. Medical staff placed a gurney next to the driver’s door for her to sit on, but she stumbled and staggered as she attempted to get on it. She ultimately approached the gurney, bent forward, and placed her hands on it to balance herself as she shuffled onto it, according to the report.

Because of her condition, she was unable to perform field sobriety tests. An officer instead followed her to the hospital, explaining that she was being investigated for DUI. She declined to answer questions or produce a breath sample, according to the report.

Klontz later reported that she was informed she could drive, although there were restrictions. She claimed to have filed for a hardship license. According to the report, a check of her driving history revealed that her license was suspended or revoked.

The Oklahoma native was detained for DUI, refusal to submit to DUI tests, and driving with a suspended or revoked license with knowledge. She was booked into the Lake County Jail without bond.

She was also jailed in 2025 after incriminating camera footage revealed she had beaten her partner.
