Court documents detail new information in the arrest of a Mesa man accused of stabbing his wife 24 times.
According to a police report, the suspect, 32-year-old Nathaniel Gotham, contacted 911 on Saturday and admitted to stabbing his wife in their east Mesa apartment in order to get her to stop talking.
“‘I did it, it’s all my fault,'” he stated over the phone, according to authorities.
Mesa police officers arrived at their residence on University Drive near 40th Street that night to find the lady severely injured and Gotham on top of her, covered in blood.
Officers quickly began assisting the victim, who was bleeding profusely. She was rushed to the hospital and is now in stable condition, Mesa police stated in a statement Sunday.
According to the police report, the woman was stabbed 16 times in the back and also suffered knife wounds in her head, neck, and face. According to investigators, she had injuries on her hands from attempting to defend herself.
According to the story, Gotham eventually admitted to detectives that he “snapped” and stabbed his wife. During a check of the premises, officers discovered a kitchen steak knife, which they suspect was used in the stabbing.
When asked why he attacked her, Gotham stated that he intended to hurt her and make her stop talking, according to the article.
While hitting her, Gotham informed his wife that she had “wasted the best years of my life,” and that he had “ended up with the wrong woman,” according to the report.
According to documents, the couple has been together for nearly 14 years, four of which have been married, and they have no children together.
Gotham revealed to investigators that he previously attacked his wife, choking her during an altercation years ago.
According to authorities, after the incident, he attempted to call his mother-in-law to apologize. He also called his mother, informing her that she was unlikely to see him again.
Gotham made his initial court appearance in Maricopa County on Sunday, where he is charged with attempted murder. The judge put his bond at $500,000. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Friday.
