Attorney General Peter Neronha announced today that a Pawtucket man was sentenced in Providence County Superior Court for his role in the driving death of 34-year-old Nanleomariz Albizu on New Year’s Day, 2022.
Superior Court Justice Luis Matos sentenced Gregory Miller, 47, to 15 years in prison, 10 years in the ACI, a five-year license suspension, and a $5,000 fine.
At a hearing on April 27, 2026, the defendant pleaded nolo contendere to one count of failure to stop after being involved in a fatal crash and one count of driving to endanger resulting in death.
“The loss of Nanleomariz is an unthinkable tragedy that will forever impact her family, friends, and our community as a whole,” stated Attorney General Neronha. “Nanleomariz was a daughter, sister, aunt, and preschool teacher who was universally loved and respected by all who knew her. While nothing can bring Nanleomariz back, I hope this substantial sentence gives some comfort and closure to those who continue to mourn her loss. I’d like to thank the Lincoln Police Department and the Rhode Island State Police for their cooperation in this case.”
If the case had gone to trial, the State would have been able to show that Miller fled the scene of an automobile accident that killed Albizu on January 1, 2022.
That morning, Lincoln Police Department officers responded to Cobble Hill Road for a complaint of a roll-over car crash. When cops arrived at the site, they discovered that the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Miller, had escaped. Nanleomariz was found unconscious several yards away from the truck, with substantial head damage. Nanleomariz was immediately transferred to Rhode Island Hospital and pronounced dead.
Investigators confirmed via video security footage from Bally’s Twin River Casino that the couple entered and departed the casino in the vehicle involved in the accident. Miller later surrendered himself to Lincoln Police Headquarters on January 3, 2022.
Those who knew Albizu describe her as a preschool teacher at Bishop McVinney School who was “full of love and light.”
Family members organized a petition to seek Miller’s maximum sentence.
Assistant Attorney General John Corrigan from the Office of the Attorney General and Detectives Richard Bousquet and Kyle Wingate of the Lincoln Police Department spearheaded the investigation and prosecution of the case, with assistance from the Rhode Island State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, Captain Jeffrey L’Heureux and Lieutenant Adam Kennett.
