Police apprehended two men Thursday night after they attacked a man and stole his car near a Norwood Commuter Rail station, according to Norwood police.
Johanns Ivan Miranda-Pizarro, 23, of Boston, and Demarcus La’Jameous Atkins, 20, of Norwood, pleaded not guilty to unarmed robbery, carjacking, conspiracy to commit a crime, larceny of a motor vehicle, and assault and battery during their arraignments in Dedham District Court on Friday, court records show.
Miranda-Pizarro has also been charged with reckless operation, failing to stop for police, driving with a suspended licence, and two traffic infractions in connection with the incident, according to police.
Around 9:40 p.m. on July 16, a Norwood police officer on patrol saw a Honda Accord going down Broadway without its lights turned on, according to authorities. The police attempted to pull over the car, but the driver did not stop.
According to authorities, the officer pursued the automobile for several streets before stopping it. While the officer searched the area for the Honda, a witness informed him that two males had abandoned a car nearby and escaped on foot.
According to authorities, the officer quickly observed two people racing along Winter Street. Following a brief foot chase, additional officers arrived on the scene and assisted the officer in apprehending the perpetrators.
While investigators were investigating the incident, a man called police to say that he had been assaulted earlier that night near the Norwood Central Commuter Rail station, officials said. The victim had minor injuries, but his attackers stole his automobile, he stated.
According to the preliminary enquiry, the victim had planned to meet one of the suspects at the train station. During the incident, two males beat the victim and seized his phone and car before departing the station.
Investigators determined that the Honda Accord belonged to the victim and identified Miranda-Pizarro and Atkins as the suspects in both crimes, police said.
Miranda-Pizarro was jailed on $15,000 cash bond at her arraignment, while Atkins was placed on $1,000 cash bail, according to court documents. Both were ordered not to contact each other or the victim.
Both men are scheduled to return to court on August 20 for a probable cause hearing.
