A man was shot and killed late Sunday night near a popular bar area in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, and police were still on the scene early Monday morning collecting evidence. One person is in custody.
According to authorities, the gunshot occurred around 11:43 p.m. on the 2200 block of North Lincoln Avenue, near the intersection of Lincoln and Webster. A fight-related gunshot occurred less than a block away last month at Lincoln and Belden Avenues when a group was leaving a neighbouring bar.
The shooting on Sunday night was also the result of a quarrel, according to police, after someone pulled a gun during a physical struggle. That person then fired several shots at a 30-year-old man, who was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
The man was later pronounced deceased, according to authorities.
Photos and video from the scene showed police tape covering streets and closing off roads, bars, and restaurants near Lincoln and Webster. More than 20 evidence markers, which are generally placed near shot casings, were visible.
Police said they recovered a gun. One person was in custody, with charges pending.
In early June, 43rd Ward Ald. Timmy Knudsen issued a letter to neighbours following a shooting in the same area that left one person critically injured. For numerous years, my office has been in communication with the City’s Business Affairs and Consumer Protection Department (BACP) and CPD regarding this corridor, primarily to lobby for stronger nightlife regulations,” the letter stated. “We consistently receive complaints about noise, cleanliness, and safety from a few businesses along this stretch. Adjacent businesses and people have called for a rethinking of what is permissible along this corridor, and they have joined forces in this continuing campaign.”
According to Knudsen’s letter, his office is requesting that the city allow him to “set new rules” along a strip of businesses near Lincoln and Belden.
