A former South Carolina Department of Corrections official is set to plead guilty in federal court Wednesday afternoon to an alleged $550,000 jail bribery scheme.
Lowanda Atkinson is expected to appear before U.S. District Judge Sherri A. Lydon at 3 p.m. in Columbia’s Matthew J. Perry Federal Courthouse. Federal prosecutors have not yet revealed the particular crime to which Atkinson is likely to plead guilty.
The hearing comes after four other defendants indicted in the same case pleaded guilty earlier this week, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.
After Wednesday’s hearing, U.S. Attorney Bryan Stirling is scheduled to conduct a news conference outside the courthouse to discuss the case.
Federal authorities claim the plot involved bribery related to South Carolina’s jail system and was worth around $550,000.
