The Mississippi Department of Human Services has indicted a woman following an investigation into the alleged illegal receipt of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
According to the MDHS Office of Inspector General, Adrianna Allen of Claiborne County was arrested on June 24 after investigators discovered she had collected $28,330 in SNAP benefits fraudulently.
The case was sent to the Claiborne County District Attorney’s Office, which issued an indictment on June 9, according to MDHS. Allen was later arrested by Claiborne County officials.
“This is a great example of collaboration between our investigations team, MDHS county offices, District Attorneys, and local law enforcement,” said Sandra Griffith, MDHS inspector general, in a statement.
According to MDHS, Agent Griffin from the Office of Inspector General’s Division of inquiry led the inquiry. The division was founded in 2018 and is in charge of discovering, preventing, and deterring fraud, waste, and abuse. MDHS stated that the division has recovered millions of dollars in SNAP overpayments since its inception.
“This investigation and indictment demonstrate the effectiveness of the safeguards that we have put in place to detect, investigate, and prevent fraud,” MDHS Executive Director Robert G. “Bob” Anderson stated. “Every step we take to prevent fraud ensures that resources and support will continue to reach the Mississippians who need it most.”
