Los Angeles man gets life in prison in fatal Vero Beach fentanyl case

A Los Angeles man has been sentenced to life in federal prison for selling fentanyl that caused the overdose death of a Vero Beach resident, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

In May 2026, a federal jury convicted Alfonso Guerrero, 39, of trafficking fentanyl, which resulted in death.

According to evidence produced in court, Guerrero sold one-tenth of a gram of fentanyl to David Eller on May 16, 2023, in a transaction filmed by a doorbell camera. Eller was discovered dead in his Vero Beach home hours later.

Guerrero was caught two days later, authorities said, while in possession of extra fentanyl for distribution.

According to Sheriff Eric Flowers, this case highlights investigators’ efforts to identify narcotics dealers responsible for fatal overdoses. We will not accept drug sales in our community. “I am proud of our detectives and federal partners for their efforts in this investigation,” Flowers said.

The investigation was carried out by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Miami Field Division. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida prosecuted the case.
