A 2-year-old boy is recovering after police say he shot himself in the stomach Friday night at his home in East Toledo.
Toledo police detained Sulieman T. Rahim, 28, in connection with the incident. He is charged with two third-degree felony counts of endangering minors and one third-degree felony count of tampering with evidence, according to court records.
According to court documents, Rahim was visiting his son around 7:30 p.m. on Friday when the toddler discovered a loaded gun in Rahim’s backpack.
Police reported that the child then shot himself in the stomach. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where authorities said his condition has since stabilized.
According to the lawsuit, Rahim allegedly hid the gun beneath a register vent in the home’s bedroom.
Officers later discovered the gun. Police reported that a 13-year-old girl was also present inside the house at the time of the incident.
Police reported Saturday that the child is currently stable.
“Our thoughts are with the child and his family,” a Toledo police official stated.
