A Massachusetts man was sentenced in an Augusta courtroom yesterday for beating another man in what prosecutors described as a vigilante justice effort.
According to the Morning Sentinel, Michael Cote Junior, 32, will serve eight years in prison for attacking a 23-year-old man in Athens after learning that the man had sex with Cote’s then-17-year-old stepdaughter, who has autism.
According to the publication, Cote and two others drove to the man’s home to confront him.
They claim Cote hit him with brass knuckles and a baseball bat, which the victim had previously used on Cote’s wife when she attempted to damage his television.
The victim suffered major brain injuries, which his mother claimed rendered him permanently incapacitated.
The prosecution argued for a heavier term, claiming that the victim’s race may have had a role in the assault.
