A Leesburg man was apprehended after allegedly battering his girlfriend’s face during a argument.
At 9:35 a.m. Wednesday, an officer responded to a 911 hang-up call that turned out to be a battery involving 27-year-old Zakari Jaquan William Kamau, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.
When the police arrived, he discovered Kamau’s girlfriend of five years crying in the driveway, with scratch marks on the right side of her face. She explained that she was on the phone with a friend in the kitchen when Kamau abruptly began arguing with her. They walked to the restroom next to the kitchen, where he struck her on the right side of her face, according to the complaint.
She was originally unwilling to provide additional information, claiming she merely wanted Kamau to leave. According to the report, she did not immediately explain how she obtained the marks on her face, denied being struck or scratched, and provided inconsistent descriptions of the occurrence when questioned.
After more interrogation, the girlfriend said that she followed Kamau to the restroom, where he “mushed” her on the right side of her ear. She showed by putting a hand on her face and squeezing tightly. She also revealed an open palm, indicating that Kamau jabbed and scratched her with his fingertips, resulting in injuries on her right ear, brow, and upper lip, according to the report.
She also stated that while in the restroom, she tossed an empty milk jug at Kamau to get him away from her.
The officer then spoke with Kamau, who said they were in the kitchen when the argument started. He walked into the bathroom to take a shower, but his girlfriend followed him. She attacked him many times with an empty milk jug and pulled his hair, prompting him to push her away, according to the complaint.
At first, he claimed nothing had happened between him and his girlfriend. He denied placing his hands on her. According to the report, he received no injuries and his hair and bonnet remained untouched.
The officer walked through the residence and discovered a milk jug in the bathroom. Another male resident indicated that he was outdoors throughout the altercation and saw nothing, according to the report.
In addition, a review of Kamau’s criminal history revealed that he had been convicted of battery in March, August, and November of 2019.
Kamau was arrested on a charge of simple violence (domestic) and put into Lake County Jail. He was released after posting the $2,500 bond.
