The stands filled at the Eugene Emeralds game Aug. 22 as popcorn made its way through the crowd and fans milled about. Barry Barreau, 71, stood alone. As always, he warmed up to make sure he could reach the high C note, and he drank excess amounts of water so as not to be “scared spitless” before his performance.

Barreau is no stranger to playing for crowds. He regularly performs at community concerts and sporting events, but for that night’s game, he was not only looking forward to his performance but also to the 42 friends and family members in attendance.

Barreau is a dedicated husband, grandfather and community man who gets a rush from playing the trumpet. He cherishes the way his grandchildren can “see their papa playing an instrument, hopefully sparking an interest in music for them in the future,” Barreau said.
