A Winter Haven woman was taken into custody Sunday morning after home security footage caught her attempting to enter locked car doors on her own street, police said.
Officers responded to a home on Giorgio Drive about 11:22 a.m. on August 23 after a resident reported seeing a suspicious individual on the property. According to the homeowner, a Ring camera alert from around 30 minutes ago showed a woman strolling into the front yard and approaching two vehicles parked in the driveway.
Video video shows the woman pulling on the first vehicle’s door doorknob before discovering it was locked. She then tried the door handle of the second vehicle, which was likewise locked, before departing the premises.
Police canvassed the neighborhood and discovered 32-year-old Natalie Adou Adjo, who lived on the same street. Officers noticed Adjo wearing the same attire as in the doorbell footage. When given an image from the camera, Adjo acknowledged that she was in the video.
When cops questioned her about why she was trying to get into the automobiles, Adjo replied that she was not attempting to enter the vehicles but rather looking for cigarets.
Adjo was arrested and held at the Polk County Jail. She faces two third-degree felony counts of attempting to burglarize an unoccupied vehicle.
“This is another case where making sure the car doors were locked saved this victim from potentially losing their property,” stated Winter Haven Police Chief Vance Monroe. “I applaud the victim for taking this step to prevent crime, and encourage all of our citizens to do the same.”
