The Oregon Department of Forestry and U.S. Forest Service were on scene Wednesday, Aug. 26, responding to a wildfire near Hills Creek Reservoir, roughly 15 miles south of Oakridge.
Initial reports from the disaster-tracking app Watch Duty indicated the blaze ignited around 2:15 p.m. and was initially under one acre in size. Tower cameras operated by the Oregon Hazards Lab captured a substantial plume of smoke billowing above the reservoir area within the Willamette National Forest.
The forestry department dispatched three engines, a bulldozer, and a helicopter to the scene. The U.S. Forest Service, which holds primary jurisdiction over the land where the fire is burning, had not yet responded to calls from Lookout Eugene-Springfield as of the latest report.
