A Canton Township man who stabbed his mother, brother, and sister outside his family home last October has been sentenced to 6 to 11 years in prison, bringing an end to a case that had previously carried the threat of life in prison. Derek Attee Alesmaily, now 23, pled guilty in August to one count of assault with intent to murder and was forced to pay $1,898 in fines and charges in addition to his prison sentence.
Alesmaily submitted his plea on August 5 at Wayne County’s 3rd Circuit Court, according to ClickOnDetroit. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dropped eight other felony charges against him, including two more counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of assault with intent to cause great bodily harm, three counts of felonious assault, and two counts of resisting or obstructing a police officer. The agreement significantly lowered his sentencing exposure from many offenses, each of which carried the possibility of a life sentence.
The attack occurred on October 14, 2025, when Canton police and fire departments responded to a home on the 3700 block of Parklawn Drive, according to FOX 2 Detroit. According to investigators, Alesmaily attacked three family members: his 42-year-old mother, his 21-year-old brother (both of whom live in Canton Township), and his 22-year-old sister (who resides in Dearborn). According to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, all three were hospitalized and are in serious but stable condition.
According to Wayne County prosecutors, responding cops discovered two of the victims laying in the residence’s driveway and the third in the road outside. According to Fox 2, one victim was discovered a few doors down the block, and neighbors reported seeing two ladies and a guy with stab wounds, one potentially in the upper chest or arm area. Canton police arrested Alesmaily on the scene and recognized him as a victim’s family member.
According to CBS News Detroit, the property is located in the River Meadow Subdivision, near Geddes and Beck Roads. Neighbors on Parklawn Drive informed local media that police had come to the residence multiple times in the two years preceding the stabbing due to persistent domestic confrontations, according to the story.
According to court records, Alesmaily had a prior criminal history that included convictions for bank robbery and failure to stop at the scene of an accident, and he was released on parole just months before the October attack, according to ClickOnDetroit. Prosecutors first pursued habitual offender sentence enhancements in addition to the original ten charges.
At his October arraignment, 35th District Court Judge Michael Gerou set a $3 million cash bond with no ten percent option and ordered mandatory GPS tethering if Alesmaily was ever released, according to court records. Defense attorney Andrew Stacer stated at the time that his client was ready to study the material, noting that family-involved domestic situations frequently present a number of resolution alternatives — a remark that foreshadowed the plea agreement announced this month.
When the charges were filed, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy highlighted that the assault occurred during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Canton Police Deputy Chief Edward Johnson directed local citizens to crisis support via First Step’s 24-hour helpline. Under Michigan law, assault with intent to commit murder is punishable by life in prison or any number of years, but the negotiated plea resulted in the 6-to-11-year sentence handed down this week.
