FBI Indianapolis agents announced Tuesday they arrested a wanted California man.

According to federal officials, Stephen Johnson ripped off his ankle monitor and fled to Indiana. FBI officers from Indianapolis and Los Angeles located and apprehended Johnson.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Office, the Evansville Police Department, and the Posey County Sheriff’s Office all aided in the arrest.

“We used some standard investigative techniques that we use quite frequently, such as interviewing some known associates and conducting some surveillance,” FBI Indianapolis Assistant Special Agent in Charge Matt Chicantek said. “That was able to lead us to his location in Indiana.”

Chicantek claimed an associate let Johnson to stay with him while he was in Indiana.

“Right now, we’re tracking approximately 100 fugitives in the state, and some of those are state and federal fugitives,” Chicantek said.

In January, a jury convicted Johnson of dealing cocaine laced with fentanyl. An engaged pair died as a result of drug overdose.

Evidence indicates that the pair paid Johnson for the narcotics in May 2023. The victims ate them and eventually died.
