A Chicago man faces felony gun and drug charges after a traffic check in Chatham resulted in the discovery of a loaded handgun and suspected ecstasy.
South Side traffic stop arrest
Around 5:20 p.m. on August 24, Cook County Sheriff’s police stopped a black Honda CR-V in the 8400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue after the driver reportedly exploited a marked turn lane to pass traffic.
Investigators said they learned there was weed in the vehicle and asked the driver, 35-year-old Roy Coppage, and a passenger to exit while they searched for narcotics.
During the search, the sheriff’s office discovered a backpack containing a loaded gun, suspected ecstasy, ammunition, and extra tablets.
Investigators determined that the backpack belonged to Coppage and discovered that his FOID card had been revoked, according to the sheriff’s office.
Coppage has been brought into custody.
The charges
Later that nite, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Coppage with possessing a handgun by a repeat criminal offender as well as possessing a prohibited drug.
He was additionally charged with misdemeanor unlawful possession of cannabis by a motorist and cited for driving in an incorrect lane.
Coppage was ordered into Cook County Jail custody during his initial court appearance on August 25. He is due back in court on Monday.
Arrest history
According to Chicago police records, Coppage has been arrested at least three times since 2016. These arrests included a 2016 allegation of failing to submit a FOID card, as well as gun-related offenses in 2020 and 2022, respectively.
