Two drivers are facing charges after a fiery Sunday crash killed three people on I-66 in Fairfax, according to Virginia State Police (VSP).
At 4:10 p.m., a Honda Pilot collided with the back of a truck stopped in the right travel lane on westbound I-66 Express Lanes near mile marker 64.3. The truck was transporting oxygen tanks.
The Honda exploded in flames, died all three individuals inside.
VSP’s preliminary investigation found that a Toyota 4Runner was also involved in the incident. Following consultation with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the Toyota driver and truck driver were charged with reckless driving.
7News spoke Aspen Fetty, who witnessed the fireball from the fatal incident.”That was by far the most devastating thing I’ve ever seen,” Fetty stated.
Traffic was backed up for hours on Sunday as numerous lanes and all fast lanes of westbound I-66 were stopped due to the incident.
All lanes were officially reopened shortly before 11 p.m.
