A 16-year-old boy died after being found shot near Grant Skate Park in the South Loop on Wednesday night, according to Chicago police.
The incident occurred around 9:05 p.m. in the 1100 block of South Michigan Avenue.
Police said the teen was shot in the neck and sent to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Area Three investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Skateboarders are honouring the teenager on Thursday. He always kept to himself. But if you brought him into the group, he was constantly talking to everyone,” Naseer Alshareef explained.
The victim’s friend, Alshareef, described the teen as a common presence at the park. “He came almost daily.” “Everyone should be able to come here and skateboard and express themselves,” Alshareef remarked.
Alshareef claimed there was a brawl followed by a shooting.
Police were on the scene Thursday and continued to investigate. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the gunshot or if it was targeted. At the end of the day, this is Chicago, and such incidents occur,” Alshareef stated.
Skateboarders reported that the shooting took place near the park’s centre. A group gathered around the area Thursday, with one man crying and hugging a pal. “There are no adequate words for a family having to bury a 16-year-old, who should have had his entire life ahead of him, now taken by gun violence,” Alderman Lamont Robinson said in a statement. “I urge anyone who witnessed what happened or has information to come forward and help detectives.”
Skateboarders stated that the violence would not discourage them from returning to the park.
