A man here illegally was apprehended for DUI in Central Florida.
Deputies conducting traffic enforcement on Central Florida’s Interstate 4 recently saw a red Kia K4 moving at high speeds and behaving carelessly. A deputy’s radar detected the Kia at 101 MPH in a 70 MPH zone while weaving in and out of other vehicles, prompting other drivers to take evasive action and slam on their brakes. Book Walking Tours
When the deputy stopped the Kia, he noticed apparent symptoms of intoxication in the driver, 22-year-old Jhorland Atehortua, who had entered the country illegally from Colombia. The deputy also discovered a smoking pipe and drugs inside the vehicle.
According to local law enforcement, the defendant, who was illegally in the country, was apprehended by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit on DUI and other traffic charges.
According to the PCSO, Jhorland Atehortua was arrested and charged with DUI, dangerous excessive speed, reckless driving, cannabis possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Because of his illegal status, each of these offenses has been elevated by one level. He was held under an ICE hold in Polk County Jail.
“Driving under the influence is dangerous enough, but combining impaired driving with reckless speeding at more than 100 miles per hour puts countless innocent people at risk,” Sheriff Grady Judd said. “Our deputies apprehended the suspect before anyone was gravely injured or murdered. Now he will face the repercussions of his actions, and because he is here illegally, ICE has placed a hold on him as well.”
