A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the killing of Aaron McInnis, who was shot while attempting to rescue a woman in distress.
Arvoni Alexander Hayes pled guilty to first-degree manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon with a handgun when he appeared in Multnomah County Circuit Court for sentence on Friday.
On July 14, 2024, after dropping off a friend at her house near Normandale Park in Northeast Portland, McInnis was contacted by a man who requested aid, checking on a woman crying in a nearby car.
He Was Naked When He Stepped Out of the Car
Hayes was in the car with his girlfriend and eventually decided to leave her alone. He was naked when he exited the vehicle.
As he stood clothing himself, Hayes dashed back into the car and yelled at his girlfriend to drive away.
McInnis pursued the vehicle, and at a nearby junction, Hayes hopped out of the car and began shooting at him.
McInnis was hit three times and died at OHSU.
Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Eric Palmer, who prosecuted the case, characterized McInnis as ‘a hero until the very end.’
