An 18-year-old student was taken into custody on Thursday after a gun was discovered in his bookbag during a routine weapons check at Scott High School, according to a Toledo Public Schools official.
Nyjah Carter was arrested and booked at the Lucas County Jail. Carter is accused of carrying hidden weapons and possessing dangerous weapons on school grounds. According to court records, the gun was loaded.
According to police, Carter brought the gun on campus hidden inside his bookbag. The district stated that the gun was discovered during daily weapons inspections when Carter’s bookbag passed through the metal detector.
Security personnel searched the luggage and removed the firearm. TPS stated in a statement that security confiscated the firearm without incident and that lessons resumed normally. There were no threats made against any kid, staff member, or the institution.
This is the third year that Toledo Public Schools has conducted daily weapons inspections at all traditional high schools. According to TPS, this is the first weapon discovered during school checks this year.
The Toledo Police Department is leading the investigation. In addition, police questioned a Carter family member as part of their investigation.
A woman who did not want to be identified suggested that weapons inspections like this one should be implemented in all schools.
“I believe weapon checks are very well needed,” she replied. “It can stop a lot of situations, ’cause you never know what kid has problems with anyone.”
She believes the broader question is what motivates a child to carry a pistol in the first place.
“I would ask him a lot,” she claimed. “Why did you want to carry a gun? Why did you feel unsafe in the situation? What can we do to improve the streets?”
Carter is being held in the Lucas County Jail and is due to appear before a judge Friday.
