Two 19-year-old men have been detained after police say they sparked a brawl over gang affiliations, which resulted in four people being shot Tuesday night.
According to court filings, Jonathan Valladares Mojica and Mark Cortez Garcia were driving a Jeep around a home south of McKellips Road and near Centre Street when two people in a truck on their way to a store observed them.
According to authorities, the Jeep cut off the truck and forced it to halt, at which point Mojica yelled at the duo to get out while chanting gang identifiers.
An altercation erupted, and detectives said Mojica took a revolver from his waistband and pointed it at the victims.
According to police, two more persons came out of a house to observe what was going on after hearing that Mojica was threatening the original two with a gun.
A brief brawl broke out between the groups before Mojica opened fire, killing four individuals, authorities said. According to investigators, one of the victims belonged to a rival street gang.
Mojica and Garcia fled north and were captured on security cameras hopping over the wall of a nearby residence, according to court documents.
The four victims were transported to a hospital. According to authorities, two people have been freed, while a guy and a teenager remain in the hospital.
Detectives said Garcia eventually handed himself in, admitting to driving the Jeep, and identified Mojica as the gunman. According to authorities, all of the victims identified Mojica from a lineup.
Mojica was arrested Thursday, although police did not specify where.
Mojica was arrested on four counts of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of helping a criminal street gang, one count of threatening or intimidation to promote a criminal street gang, and one count of unauthorised discharge of a firearm. His bond amount was set at $250,000.
Garcia was charged with four counts of facilitation for aggravated assault, one crime of assisting a criminal street gang, and one offence of threatening or intimidating to promote a criminal street gang. His bond is set at $150,000.
