Two men were taken into custody for highway racing in Northeast El Paso on Monday, September 21.
According to court documents acquired by KTSM, an El Paso Police Department officer was conducting traffic control near the 9730 block of Railroad Drive when he heard a “loud V8 muscle car”.
He reportedly saw Dakota Landers, 26, driving a dark red Chevrolet Camaro next to a white Tesla driven by Ricardo Hernandez, 48, traveling southbound.
The officer indicated that he estimated the vehicles’ speeds to be more than 60 mph in a 35-mph zone, so he began his motorcycle and activated his emergency lights and sirens.
After catching up with both vehicles just south of Threadgill and Railroad, the officer directed Landers and Hernandez to pull over in a parking area.
The cop came off his motorcycle and told Landers to get out of the Camaro because what he did was “dumb” and he would be arrested. The officer approached the Tesla and told Hernandez the same thing, according to the arrest papers.
According to the documents, the officer told Landers that he and Hernandez “just happened to be lined up side by side and were accelerating as fast as possible”.
Landers said, “Yeah,” to which the officer responded, “That is basically the definition of racing.”
They face charges for highway racing.
