An Indianapolis man was sentenced to 46 years in prison after being convicted of various offenses related to a police chase that resulted in a deadly collision.
On Monday, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office reported that Kirk Gibson had been convicted of seven counts of obstructing police enforcement resulting in death, a Level 3 felony. He was also convicted guilty of multiple other charges, including resisting law police and theft.
Gibson was sentenced to 46 years in jail, with a 15-year enhancement for pleading guilty to persistent offender status.

The chase began in Henry County and finished at the crossroads of Washington Street and Mitthoefer Road in Indianapolis. Gibson was apparently driving 89 mph through the intersection when he collided with a Mustang and a BMW.
The high-speed collision caused the Durango to flip many times, and Dewuan L. Hampton, 33, was flung from it. Hampton was pronounced deceased on the scene.
When first responders got on the scene, three additional persons, including Gibson, were still inside the upside-down Durango. Two people were hospitalized as a result of the crash.
The crash did not result in any major injuries to the Mustang or BMW drivers.
Police reported guns strewn over the incident site, hurled from the falling Durango.
Police eventually determined that the Durango had been stolen and that Gibson was driving. According to a police investigation, Gibson did not apply the brakes before the crash.
