Celina City Councilman Stephen Schulte (Republican-Ward 1) was recently detained for allegedly driving under the influence on Sunday evening.
According to our partner daily, The Daily Standard, an off-duty Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office deputy and an off-duty St. Marys police officer witnessed two intoxicated men get into their automobiles at the Northmoor Golf Course. The officers identified the males and instructed them not to drive.
The officials claimed that the men became belligerent and went to the clubhouse.
Before leaving, one of the officers logged the vehicle registration numbers and descriptions.
One of the officials followed the men and noticed the Chevrolet vehicle “straddling the white line.” He flipped on the overhead lights, and the Chevrolet came to a stop in the Celina Moose Lodge parking lot.
Councilman Stephen Schulte reportedly informed the official that he was a municipal council member who had had “one” drink at the golf course. The official claimed he could smell alcohol from the truck, and Schulte’s eyes were moist as he stood unsteadily.
He gave Schulte Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which he apparently struggled with and was “unable to perform.”
Schulte was then arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. When he was arrested, he reportedly asked the official whether he knew he was detaining a municipal council member. The official claimed he was performing his job.
Schulte was booked and spent about an hour and a half in jail before being released.
