A homeless man in Leesburg was taken into custody on violence charges after reportedly knocking his girlfriend off her bicycle following a quarrel.
A deputy responded to a complaint from the Florida Highway Patrol regarding a domestic incident on County Road 44 near Oak Drive in Leesburg around 1:10 p.m. Tuesday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. When he arrived, he saw a trooper ordering 29-year-old Shane Anthony Shrimplin to back away from his girlfriend of a year.
The girlfriend appeared to be in the midst of a medical emergency and possibly ready to faint. The deputy told Shrimplin to back away, but he became enraged and yelled that he would not leave. He was led away from his girlfriend and eventually incarcerated, according to the story.
When asked what happened, the girlfriend indicated that she and Shrimplin were riding bicycles when he attempted to wipe her out. He pulled her off her bike in front of a brick home on Emeralda Road. According to the report, a woman emerged from the property and yelled at them to leave the yard.
They continued riding down the road when Shrimplin attempted to eliminate her once more. As a result, the girlfriend took her bike to an FHP truck she noticed parked and requested assistance getting away from Shrimplin. The report stated that she had superficial abrasions on her hand and filth on her clothes.
The deputies then spoke with Shrimplin, who claimed they were riding bikes to fetch water when his girlfriend used a racial insult during an altercation. He denied shoving her, according to the report.
However, the woman who witnessed the incident on Emeralda Road called to report hearing a woman scream. She noticed Shrimplin violently pulling on her arms as they rode their bikes toward County Road 44, according to the complaint.
Shrimplin was subsequently arrested. He continued yelling that he was a cop killer and would be able to quickly locate the trooper because they often parked near him. He also spit on the patrol vehicle’s partition and braced his legs on it to avoid being removed, according to the report.
A criminal background check found a prior battery conviction. Shrimplin allegedly violated his pretrial release conditions, according to the report.
Shrimplin was charged with domestic battery (second or subsequent crime) and resisting an officer without violence. The North Carolina native was placed into the Lake County Jail, with a bond of $6,000.
