Former Lawrence Cop Apprehended for Intimidation

A former Lawrence police officer is in jail after Greenfield police said he sent threatening text messages to Lawrence officers.

Stuart Bishop is being held in Hancock County Jail for 72 hours as the prosecutor’s office investigates evidence of probable cause. Prosecutors will then decide whether to file charges.

Greenfield police said a SWAT team executed a search and arrest warrant at Bishop’s home on Tuesday morning. Officers put him into arrest without incident.

According to police, Bishop emailed specific threats to Lawrence policemen on Monday night.

Investigators said they discovered elements of Bishop’s previous Lawrence police equipment, including as his uniform and police identity. They found no Lawrence police weapons.

Bishop resigned from the Lawrence Police Department on August 26.

He was also arrested in June on suspicion of OWI when a Greenfield police pulled over his truck. According to court filings, the officer smelled alcohol, noticed red and glossy eyes and slurred speech, and discovered a revolver and a beer can inside the truck.

The Lawrence Police agency informed WIBC that Bishop is no longer working with the agency and sent inquiries about his arrest, investigation, and potential charges to Greenfield police and prosecutors.
