A five‑year‑old kindergartner lost his life when a sizable digital display board detached from a classroom wall and landed on him at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay, Florida.
Palm Bay police and the child’s family identified the victim as Bellamy Dawkins‑Morris.
On October 7, school staff alerted emergency responders that equipment had fallen on a child. Faculty and paramedics provided first aid on site, then transported the boy to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Deputy Police Chief Nick Szczepanski noted that, although the incident looks like an accident, detectives from the special victims unit, major case unit, and crime‑scene team are actively probing how the board fell.
“On the surface, this appears to be a tragic accident,” Szczepanski said during a news conference. “However, our investigators… are actively investigating.”
Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell of Brevard Public Schools spoke with police and confirmed that counseling and support services are available to students, teachers, and staff.
“We lost a life today, a precious young life, and there are no words to describe that loss,” Rendell said.
The equipment that fell was an interactive whiteboard made by Promethean. In a statement, Promethean expressed heartbreak over the tragedy and confirmed, “We have begun a thorough investigation into this accident.”
Family members spoke publicly, questioning how the heavy wall‑mounted display could have become detached.
“It’s unimaginable how angry my family and I are,” his great‑aunt said. “Accountability, it’s going to happen. Somebody has to have answers. It could have been anybody’s child.” She added, “We lost our baby and he’s never coming back to us. He was doing so well, he just started kindergarten.”
After the boy’s death, Brevard County Public Schools paused all pending display installations and commissioned three rounds of structural safety checks throughout district classrooms, including an independent inspection.
