A 39‑year‑old man now confronts five attempted‑murder charges after a gunfire report outside a local McDonald’s sent deputies to his Sarasota home, where a deputy shot him during an armed standoff early Sunday morning.
According to the Tampa Free Press, the drama unfolded around 12:19 a.m. on October 11 in the parking lot of the McDonald’s at Bee Ridge Road and Cattlemen Road. Callers told the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office that shots rang out outside the restaurant, but the shooter fled before patrol units could arrive. No one was injured at the scene.
Investigators later identified the suspect as Casey King and traced him to his residence at 4818 Hoyer Drive. The sheriff’s office has not disclosed what sparked the parking‑lot shooting or how officers linked King to the incident.
Deputies encircled the Hoyer Drive property, blasting the public‑address system on a marked cruiser and sounding sirens to command King to step outside and surrender.
Instead of complying, King opened fire on the deputies stationed in front of his home, the sheriff’s office reported. One deputy responded by shooting King multiple times.
Officers arrested King at the house and rushed him to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he was listed as critical but stable on Sunday. Officials have not revealed how many rounds were fired, the exact number of deputies present, or whether any officers were injured during the exchange.
King now faces five counts of attempted second‑degree murder of a law‑enforcement officer for shooting at the deputies outside his home. Investigators say they plan to bring additional charges related to the initial gunfire at the McDonald’s.
